The elk behavior shown here is often referred to as wheezing, which is a threat. With its head held high, an elk will retract its upper lip as if exposing rudimentary canines and grind its teeth, while uttering a soft hissing sound (wheezing). This behavior is exhibited by both bull and cow elk. The bull elk pictured here is threatening a cow elk (not in photo) that wandered away from his harem.
