Pronghorn in Snow

A pronghorn buck walks in a snow-covered landscape.

The pronghorn is unique to North America, and being the only surviving member of the Antilocapridae family, it has been in North America for over a million years. Though not an antelope, it is often referred to as the American antelope, prong buck, pronghorn antelope, prairie antelope, antelope or speed goat.

Having evolved to outrun now-extinct predators such as the American cheetah, the pronghorn is the fastest land mammal in the Western Hemisphere. It can run at speeds of nearly 60 miles per hour and can run long distances at speeds of 30-40 miles per hour.
