Bull Elk Flehmen

Standing in willows beside a lake, this big bull elk is engaged in lip curling behavior after tasting or scenting the urine of a cow elk. Also known as the Flehmen position, Flehmen reaction, Flehming or Flehmening, this type of behavior is common among ungulates during the mating season, and facilitates the transfer of pheromones and other scents into the vomeronasal organ.
